Before you start

  • A domain (optional). n8n starts on a Hostinger address; you only need your own domain for an address like automation.yourcompany.com.

Step 1: pick the n8n template

When you order the VPS, or later in the panel, choose Ubuntu 24.04 with n8n. According to Hostinger, it installs n8n running in Docker. For many executions at once, Hostinger also offers Ubuntu 24.04 with n8n (queue mode), which starts with 3 workers; it fits KVM 4 better. Changing the template on a server in use erases it, so back up first.

Step 2: open n8n and create your account

When the server finishes setting up, open https://n8n. followed by your VPS hostname (shown in the Hostinger panel). On the first visit, n8n asks you to create the admin account: email, name and password. Use a strong password, because this panel is reachable from the internet.

Step 3 (optional): use your own domain

Hostinger has a separate guide to change the n8n domain on a VPS. In general, you point a subdomain to the VPS IP, update the n8n settings with the new address and restart n8n so it can issue a certificate.

Step 4: keep n8n updated

According to Hostinger, you update the template’s n8n over SSH (or the browser terminal) from the n8n folder:

docker compose up -d

Export your workflows and read the release notes before updating.
