What can your internet provider see?
By Leonardo Araújo, CEO of Leaven Marketing · Information checked on
Your internet provider can't read what you type on HTTPS sites (the padlock in your browser), but it does see which sites you visit, when and for how long, plus your IP and how much data each connection uses.

What it sees and what it doesn’t
| Information | Without a VPN | With a VPN |
|---|---|---|
| Sites you visit | visible | hidden |
| Time and length of connections | visible | only the VPN connection |
| Content of HTTPS pages | hidden | hidden |
| Content of non-HTTPS sites | visible | hidden |
How it sees sites even with HTTPS
Before opening a site, your device asks a DNS server for its address, and that DNS server usually belongs to your provider. The site name also tends to show up at the start of the connection. Even without the page content, that’s enough to build a list of sites you visit.
How to hide it
- Use HTTPS everywhere.
- Turn on encrypted DNS (DNS over HTTPS) in your browser.
- Use a VPN: your provider only sees an encrypted connection to the VPN server.
According to NordVPN, its app includes private DNS and a Kill Switch that cuts the internet if the VPN drops, so nothing leaks outside the tunnel. See the NordVPN plans.
