What is a VPN and what is it for?
By Leonardo Araújo, CEO of Leaven Marketing · Information checked on
A VPN (virtual private network) creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and the internet. Websites see the VPN server's IP instead of yours, and whoever sits in the middle, like a café Wi-Fi or your internet provider, can no longer see what you open.

How a VPN works
- You open the VPN app and pick a server.
- The app encrypts everything leaving your device and sends it to that server.
- The server visits the website for you and sends the answer back through the tunnel.
What it’s good for
- Public Wi-Fi: the network can’t see or change what you send.
- Privacy from your provider: it no longer sees which sites you visit.
- Hiding your IP: sites and advertisers see the server’s IP, not yours.
- Travel: connect to a server at home to use your bank and apps as usual.
When it makes no difference
- It doesn’t make you anonymous if you log in to your accounts.
- It doesn’t stop scams where you type your password into a fake site, although some VPNs block known scam sites.
- It doesn’t speed up your internet; it adds a step to the route.

FAQ
Is a VPN the same as incognito mode?
No. Incognito only stops your browser from saving history; websites and your provider still see everything. A VPN hides your IP and encrypts the connection.
Does a VPN work on phones?
Yes. The main VPNs have apps for Android and iPhone.
Do I need it on all the time?
Not necessarily. Turn it on on public Wi-Fi and whenever you want to hide your IP.
